In Him
Ephesians 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ ….
Paul begins his letter to the Church at Ephesians with praise. He blesses God, the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Blessing is an ability we inherited from God. He blesses us, and we can bless Him, not to the same degree, but in our own way. By blessing God, we do not make His life better or enhance Him in any way. We cannot improve on Who God is or what He does, but He has enabled us to bring Him glory and thus bless Him with our obedient lives and surrendered words.
David blesses God dozens of times in his psalms. One memorable time, he commands his soul to bless the Lord, calling on everything he is to focus on magnifying God and exalting Him in his life (Psalm 103). We can bless the Lord, and He receives it, and we are blessed in the process!
Paul knows this and begins this letter by praising God. He then pivots to point out that we have been blessed, too. We have been blessed by God with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. Immediately, Paul brings our attention to the invisible and transcendent. The blessings are not tangible, temporal, or physical. They are spiritual, invisible, and intangible. They require faith to be received and realized. They are of the highest form in the universe. They are eternal. They are everything we need and want. They are in Him.
In Him is the operative phrase in this first chapter of this letter from Paul to the Church in Ephesus. All the spiritual blessings and every other blessing we receive come as the result of being in Him.
We will discuss what it means to be In Him in coming discussions because I do not want to depart from this initial declaration. Blessed with every spiritual blessing in heaven in Him is a dynamic few understand. Everything God does for us is a blessing. God’s blessings transform us and improve our lives in this world and for eternity. Paul begins with spiritual blessings because his chief concern is forever. Having experienced the struggles of this world firsthand (1 Corinthians 11), Paul knows that our primary focus is to be eternity. Paul describes the struggles of this time on earth as light and in no way comparable to the glory of eternity.
Spiritual blessings in heavenly places also points to transcendence. Paul is reminding us that we have access to two dimensions. We live in physical bodies in this fallen creation, but we have access through the Spirit of God to the dimensions of God—heaven. We can communicate with God through prayer, just as He communicates with us in so many ways beyond our five senses. Paul’s declaration of our complete spiritual blessedness is the call to live a transcendent life.
The Model Prayer of Matthew 6 is a similar call. When Jesus said, “Pray like this.” He was giving us instructions on how to transcend and host the heavenlies on earth. Jesus was inviting us to enter heaven.
Heaven is not a place we go when we die. Heaven is the abode of God. Heaven is God Himself, where He resides and rules. The pattern Jesus offers us to use seeks to usher Heaven to earth, not earth to Heaven.
“Our Father who abides in the heavenly dimension of Himself, We praise Your Name! We pray that Your Kingdom rule that governs the universe from Your Presence, Would come to us on earth, The very expression of Your Will as expressed by Your Word, Let Your transcendent Kingdom manifest on earth among us. Let God’s presence, as expressed by the term Heaven, invade creation. Let Your Rule (Kingdom) reign in our obedience. Let Your Will be accomplished in us in these transformed bodies to transform others and the very creation that sin corrupted.”
Spiritual blessings may be otherworldly, but they are for us now on earth. We need them because we are nothing without Him (John 15). Our only hope is to be IN HIM. In Him is everything we need for this life and the next. Our eternal blessings are not to be reserved for some time in the future. They are for now, the present. It is His Presence Present in us as we are In Him.
Begin today to ask God to reveal to you the spiritual blessings that He has bestowed on us. Ask Him to show you at least one of those blessings today!
Efesios 1:3 - Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos ha bendecido con toda bendición espiritual en los lugares celestiales en Cristo…
Pablo comienza su carta a la Iglesia en Efesios con alabanza. Bendice a Dios, el Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Bendecir es una capacidad que heredamos de Dios. Él nos bendice, y nosotros podemos bendecirlo, no en la misma medida, sino a nuestra manera. Al bendecir a Dios, no mejoramos su vida ni lo enaltecemos de ninguna manera. No podemos mejorar quién es Dios ni lo que hace, pero él nos ha permitido glorificarlo y, por lo tanto, bendecirlo con nuestras vidas obedientes y palabras entregadas.
David bendice a Dios docenas de veces en sus salmos. En una ocasión memorable, ordena a su alma bendecir al Señor, instando a todo su ser a concentrarse en magnificar a Dios y exaltarlo en su vida (Salmo 103). Podemos bendecir al Señor, y Él lo recibe, ¡y nosotros somos bendecidos en el proceso!
Pablo lo sabe y comienza esta carta alabando a Dios. Luego, cambia de tema para señalar que nosotros también hemos sido bendecidos. Hemos sido bendecidos por Dios con toda bendición espiritual en los lugares celestiales. Inmediatamente, Pablo dirige nuestra atención a lo invisible y trascendente. Las bendiciones no son tangibles, temporales ni físicas. Son espirituales, invisibles e intangibles. Requieren fe para ser recibidas y realizadas. Son de la forma más elevada del universo. Son eternas. Son todo lo que necesitamos y deseamos. Están en Él.
En Él es la frase clave en este primer capítulo de esta carta de Pablo a la Iglesia de Éfeso. Todas las bendiciones espirituales y cualquier otra bendición que recibimos son el resultado de estar en Él.
Hablaremos sobre lo que significa estar en Él en próximas charlas, porque no quiero desviarme de esta declaración inicial. Bendecidos con toda bendición espiritual en el cielo en Él es una dinámica que pocos entienden. Todo lo que Dios hace por nosotros es una bendición. Las bendiciones de Dios nos transforman y mejoran nuestras vidas en este mundo y en la eternidad. Pablo comienza con las bendiciones espirituales porque su principal preocupación es la eternidad. Habiendo experimentado las luchas de este mundo en primera persona (1 Corintios 11), Pablo sabe que nuestro enfoque principal es la eternidad. Pablo describe las luchas de este tiempo en la tierra como leves, de ninguna manera comparables a la gloria de la eternidad.
Las bendiciones espirituales en los lugares celestiales también apuntan a la trascendencia. Pablo nos recuerda que tenemos acceso a dos dimensiones. Vivimos en cuerpos físicos en esta creación caída, pero tenemos acceso a través del Espíritu de Dios a las dimensiones de Dios: el cielo. Podemos comunicarnos con Dios a través de la oración, así como Él se comunica con nosotros de tantas maneras más allá de nuestros cinco sentidos. La declaración de Pablo de nuestra completa bienaventuranza espiritual es el llamado a vivir una vida trascendente.
La Oración Modelo de Mateo 6 es un llamado similar. Cuando Jesús dijo: «Oren así», nos estaba dando instrucciones sobre cómo trascender y albergar los lugares celestiales en la tierra. Jesús nos estaba invitando a entrar al cielo. El Cielo no es un lugar al que vamos al morir. El Cielo es la morada de Dios. El Cielo es Dios mismo, donde reside y gobierna. El modelo que Jesús nos ofrece busca traer el Cielo a la tierra, no la tierra al Cielo.
“Padre nuestro que habitas en la dimensión celestial de Sí mismo,
¡Alabamos Tu Nombre!
Oramos para que el gobierno de Tu Reino, que gobierna el universo desde Tu Presencia,
venga a nosotros en la tierra,
la expresión misma de Tu Voluntad, expresada en Tu Palabra,
que Tu Reino trascendente se manifieste en la tierra entre nosotros.
Que la presencia de Dios, expresada por el término Cielo, invada la creación.
Que Tu Gobierno (Reino) reine en nuestra obediencia.
Que Tu Voluntad se cumpla en nosotros en estos cuerpos transformados para transformar a otros y a la creación misma que el pecado corrompió”.
Las bendiciones espirituales pueden ser de otro mundo, pero son para nosotros ahora en la tierra. Las necesitamos porque no somos nada sin Él (Juan 15). Nuestra única esperanza es estar EN ÉL. En Él está todo lo que necesitamos para esta vida y la venidera. Nuestras bendiciones eternas no están reservadas para el futuro. Son para ahora, el presente. Es Su Presencia presente en nosotros, como nosotros estamos en Él.
